Mac Miller
I remember I was 13 when I first found out about Mac Miller. I used to spend lots of time in my room as an angsty teen scouring the internet for new music. I would use things like Limewire, Myspace, datpiff.com, YouTube to go down rabbit holes. This led to finding the Kids mixtape. I hadn’t heard anything like it before & immediately had Senior Skip Day on repeat.
Something about Mac Miller drew me in from early on & it continued. It wasn’t until this year that I finally had the fully formed words or thoughts to express it.
I think he was an artist who really laid his soul on the line for his music & has given us the gift of seeing such a complex human. Someone with such a vulnerable, goofy essence that also had a lot of depth & struggles.
He was constantly doing something new & was frankly, ahead of his time. You can discover some of the deep-rooted shit from his alter egos like all of his Larry Fisherman, Larry Lovestein, Delusional Thomas. The same man who created The Divine Feminine album, also has a song on SoundCloud that is just called PlaneCarBoat (which ya gotta listen to if you haven’t).
This year, as I have evolved, new songs in the Mac catalog that I had previously overlooked, have started to become my favorites. Specifically off the GOOD:AM album. That album has been on repeat this year for me & it was released 10 years ago.
His music is the gift that keeps on giving even after he has been gone for 7 years. You can have some artists that you enjoy from a young age that you outgrow, but this music has grown alongside me.
